1. Annual Maintenance Calendar
Post this on your refrigerator. This is everything in this article.
| Frequency | What to Do | Estimated Cost | DIY or Professional? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Check tire air pressure | $0 (free at gas station) | DIY |
| Monthly | Check all lights | $0 | DIY |
| Every 3 months | Refill washer fluid | $3 | DIY |
| Every 6 months or 5,000 km | Engine oil change | $30-$50 | Professional (recommended) |
| Annually | Wiper blade replacement | $10-$20 | DIY possible |
| Annually | Air filter replacement | $15-$30 | DIY possible |
| Annually or every 10,000 km | Oil filter replacement | $10-$20 | With oil change |
| Every 2 years | Inspection (required) | $500-$1,000 | Professional (required) |
| Every 3-5 years | Battery replacement | $50-$150 | Professional (recommended) |
| Every 3-5 years | Brake pad replacement | $100-$300 | Professional (required) |
| Every 4-5 years | Tire replacement | $300-$800 | Professional |
| Every 7-10 years | Timing belt replacement (if applicable) | $300-$800 | Professional (required) |
The most important are “oil changes” and “inspections.” If you don’t forget these two, your car basically won’t break down. Everything else is at the “nice to do for longevity” level.

2. Complete Guide to Oil Changes
The most important and most cost-effective car maintenance is oil changes. When engine oil—the lifeblood of the engine—deteriorates, internal engine components wear out, and in the worst case, it can lead to engine seizure (repair costs exceeding 300,000-500,000 yen).
Change Guidelines
| Vehicle Type | Distance | Period | Whichever Comes First |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Gasoline Car | 5,000km | 6 months | ✅ |
| Kei Car | 5,000km | 6 months | ✅ (Deteriorates faster due to smaller engine) |
| Turbo Car | 3,000km | 3 months | ✅ (Turbo runs hot, deteriorates quickly) |
| Diesel Car | 5,000~10,000km | 6 months | ✅ (Follow manufacturer specifications) |
Where to Get Oil Changed?
| Location | Cost | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Gas Station | 3,000~5,000 yen | Can be done while filling up. Wait time about 15 minutes |
| Auto Parts Store | 3,000~6,000 yen | Choice of oil types. Member discounts available |
| Repair Shop/Mechanic | 3,000~5,000 yen | Can inspect other areas at the same time. Early detection of problems |
| Dealership | 5,000~8,000 yen | Uses genuine oil. Safe option for newer cars |
💡 Best value for money: “Get an oil change at a repair shop with a quick inspection.” For 3,000-5,000 yen, you get an oil change, and if you ask “Is there anything else you’d like to check?”, a professional will give you a free visual inspection.
3. Tire Basics
Air Pressure Check (Once a Month)
Tire air naturally loses about 5% per month. Low air pressure causes:
- Worse fuel economy (10% below recommended pressure reduces fuel economy by about 2%)
- Uneven wear shortens tire lifespan
- Risk of burst in worst case (tire rupture on highway → extremely dangerous)
How to do it: Use the free air pump at a gas station. There’s a sticker with the correct air pressure on the inside of the driver’s door. Just match the pressure to that number. Takes about 1 minute—the easiest maintenance you can do.
Check Tread Depth
100-Yen Coin Test: Insert a 100-yen coin into the tire tread. If you can see the “100” characters, tread depth is insufficient (replacement time). If you can’t see it, you’re still OK.
Tire Replacement Timeline
- Mileage: Replace at 30,000-50,000 km (varies by tire type)
- Age: 5 years from manufacture is the guideline. Rubber deteriorates even if tread remains
- How to read manufacture date: 4 digits after the “DOT” mark on tire sidewall. Example: “2423” = manufactured in week 24 of 2023

4. Battery | 3 Signs to Prevent Sudden Failure
Batteries can fail suddenly without warning. The car works fine until one morning when the engine won’t start—this is the most common winter trouble in the Yashio and Soka areas.
⚠️ Replace When You See These 3 Signs
- Starter motor turns over slowly when starting the engine—”Curl curl… curl curl…” with sluggish rotation. Normally it’s “Curl! Vroom” with one-turn start
- Headlights seem dimmer—Especially dimming during idling (at traffic lights, etc.)
💡 Free inspection available:Our shop provides free battery voltage testing. Just mention “Please check the battery too” when you come in for an oil change. We’ll give you an estimate of remaining lifespan.
5. Wipers & Washer Fluid
An unglamorous but safety-critical part.
Wiper Blades (Replace annually, ¥1,000-2,000)
Rubber degrades from UV exposure in just one year. When you notice wiping streaks or chattering (squeaking sounds), it’s time to replace them. Find your wiper model number at an auto parts store and installation is a 5-minute DIY task.
Washer Fluid (Refill every 3 months, ¥300)
Open the hood and pour the washer fluid concentrate directly into the tank (the cap has a wiper symbol on it). That’s it. This simple step prevents inspection failure due to empty washer fluid.
6. Lights & Lighting
Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and license plate lights. A single burned-out bulb constitutes a maintenance violation and can result in a fine (¥7,000 penalty).
Monthly check procedure:
- At night, shine headlights at a wall → Check if brightness is even on both sides
- While pressing the brake, check the rear (watch the reflection on the wall)
- Turn on hazard lights and check all turn signals (front, rear, left, right)
- Check license plate light from behind in a dark area
💡 If it’s difficult to check alone:Set up a smartphone on a tripod behind the car and record a video while operating the brake and turn signals. This way you can check everything by yourself.
7. Proper Car Washing Technique
🚫 Washing Methods to Avoid
- Wiping with a dry towel immediately → Sand acts like sandpaper and scratches the paint
- Washing in direct sunlight → Water droplets act as magnifying glasses and scorch the paint. Cloudy days are best
- Washing with dish soap → Strips wax and coating protection
✅ Correct Procedure
- First, rinse with water to remove sand and dust (This is most important. Never use a sponge directly)
- Lather car shampoo and wash with a sponge from top to bottom (lower areas have more sand)
- Rinse thoroughly with water
- Wipe water droplets with a microfiber cloth (air drying causes water spots)
Washing frequency for the Yashio and Soka area:Once or twice monthly is sufficient. However, wash immediately if bird droppings or tree sap land on the car. Leaving these unattended will corrode the paint irreparably.
8. Symptoms That Require Immediate Service
If you notice the following symptoms, don’t “watch and wait”—take your car to a service center immediately.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | If Ignored |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 Engine warning light on dashboard illuminates | Emissions system or electrical malfunction | Vehicle may become unable to run. Flashing light is even more urgent |
| 🔴 Metallic squeaking from brakes (squealing) | Brake pads at their limit | Brakes may fail completely. Life-threatening |
| 🔴 Steering wheel vibrates/shakes | Tire imbalance or suspension failure | Risk of loss of control at highway speeds |
| 🟡 Burning smell from engine bay | Oil leak or belt degradation | Worst case: vehicle fire |
| 🟡 Foul odor from air conditioning (moldy smell) | Mold in the evaporator | Health hazard. Especially dangerous for those with allergies |
| 🟡 Coolant temperature gauge reading abnormally high | Low coolant level or thermostat failure | Overheating → Engine seizure |
| 🟡 Liquid dripping under the vehicle | Oil, coolant, or brake fluid leak | Varies by fluid type. Red or pink fluid is especially dangerous (brake fluid or ATF) |
🔴 Mark means stop driving immediately and head to a towing service or repair shop.
🟡 Mark means contact a repair shop today.

9. Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I’d like to leave all maintenance to you
With our maintenance package, oil changes, tire rotation, and various inspections are managed at a fixed rate. We’ll contact you about what needs to be done next, so you’ll never forget.
Q. I’ve been neglecting oil changes for a long time. Is it still okay?
Please get an oil change right away. Even if the oil is pitch black, the engine is likely to recover after a change. However, if extremely degraded oil has been used for an extended period, sludge (dirt) may have accumulated inside the engine. If you’re concerned, we can also discuss flushing (internal cleaning).
Q. I’m not knowledgeable about cars. How should I explain problems?
No technical terminology needed. “It makes this sound,” “It feels like this,” “I’m concerned about this area” is sufficient. Our mechanics will identify the cause. Recording the sound or symptoms on your phone makes things even smoother.
Q. Can I change the oil myself?
Technically possible, but disposal of waste oil is troublesome (illegal dumping is against the law), and there’s the safety risk of using a jack. Even with a professional, it only costs 3,000-5,000 yen. There’s almost no advantage to DIY. It would be far more worthwhile to have someone check your tire pressure in that time instead.
