Hey everyone!
This is the blog team from SOUKYO MOTORS — your friendly neighborhood car dealership in Yashio City, Saitama, right next door to Misato. We handle vehicle sales, trade-ins, and rentals.
The area around Shin-Misato LaLa City (Costco, IKEA, LaLaport) turns into a “localized traffic disaster” every weekend. As a car dealership right next door, our staff put together this practical guide to beating the Misato gridlock from a local’s perspective.
Know the Pattern: When Misato Traffic Is at Its Worst
With Costco, IKEA, and LaLaport all within a few hundred meters of each other, weekends and holidays from 11 AM to 3 PM are peak gridlock. All three stores draw crowds simultaneously, turning the roads around Misato-Chuo and Shin-Misato stations into a standstill.
From experience, these windows tend to be smoother:
- Right after opening (9:30–10:30 AM): Costco opens at 10 AM — arrive early and the parking lot is nearly empty
- After 4 PM: Families start heading home, freeing up both roads and parking
- Weekday mornings: If you can take a day off, this is the most stress-free option by far
Route Tip: Avoid Route 298
The main culprit behind the Shin-Misato gridlock is Route 298 (the Tokyo Gaikan Expressway service road). All traffic heading to Costco, IKEA, and LaLaport funnels onto this arterial, and it clogs up every weekend without fail. The Misato-Nishi IC on the Gaikan Expressway ranks among the worst-congested interchanges in Japan — avoid it on weekends at all costs.
Back Road from Yashio
Starting from our shop in Yashio, here’s the route we recommend:
- Head north on Prefectural Route 116 (Yashio-Misato Line)
- Turn left at the Hikozawa intersection → onto Route 29 (Soka-Nagareyama Line)
- Turn left at the Komagata-Shinbashi intersection
- Turn right at the Kita-Kominkan-mae intersection
- Go straight through the Shin-Misato Ekimae intersection → turn left just before the station rotary
This route completely avoids Route 298 and gets you to the Shin-Misato station area.
Tips for Other Directions
- Using the expressway? Skip Misato-Nishi IC — exit at Soka IC or Kawaguchi-Higashi IC instead
- From Nagareyama/Matsudo: The old Nagareyama Bridge is chronically jammed. The Misato-Nagareyama Bridge Toll Road (opened Nov 2023, 150 yen toll) saves significant time
Parking: Choose Right and It’s Heaven, Choose Wrong and It’s Hell
On weekends, Costco Shin-Misato’s own multi-story parking garage is hell. There’s a massive queue just to get in, and once you’ve finished shopping, you’ll face another 1–2 hour wait just to exit. You’ve done your shopping, but now you’re stuck sitting in your car — that’s the typical weekend experience.
Instead, head for the 2nd floor and above of “Mitsui Repark Shin-Misato Ekimae No. 2 Parking”. Costco shopping carts are technically not allowed in this garage’s elevators, so most Costco shoppers avoid the upper floors — meaning there are usually open spots even during peak weekend hours.
The trade-off is hauling your purchases: either pack your bags at the cart return area on the 1st floor and carry them to the elevator, or squeeze the Costco cart into the elevator anyway (just brace yourself for some side-eye from fellow elevator-riders). Either way, it beats circling the lot for 30 minutes looking for a spot.
Tip A: Monthly Bulk-Buy Runs? Rent Smart
“If I buy that giant teddy bear AND the kitchen paper, there’s literally no room for humans in our compact car…”
Sound familiar? Just rent a spacious vehicle from us on your Costco or IKEA days.
Pick up a roomy minivan or SUV right here at our Yashio shop — Misato is just a quick back-road drive away. Not only will the cavernous trunk swallow all your loot, but vehicles with rear flip-down monitors keep the kids glued to movies and cartoons during the inevitable traffic jam. Parental stress: eliminated.
Rent a Car
Daily to long-term rentals. Sedans, SUVs, and commercial vehicles at great rates.
Tip B: Weekly Warriors — Upgrade to a Driver-Assist Vehicle
“We go every single week!” — if that’s you, you’re a true Costco/IKEA warrior.
But is your right foot screaming from all that stop-and-go?
Modern vehicles with full-speed-range ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and Auto Brake Hold automatically accelerate, decelerate, and stop in sync with the car ahead. That bumper-to-bumper fatigue drops by roughly 80% — and we’re not exaggerating.
“But I’ve still got payments on my current car…” No worries.
We’re currently running a top-dollar trade-in campaign. While you’re waiting in the Costco checkout line or sitting in the car while your partner shops, why not pull out your phone and check what your current ride is worth?

Tip C: Make the Traffic Jam Your Happy Place
Even if you can’t avoid the jam, the right in-car setup makes all the difference. Here’s what our customers swear by:
- Rear monitors + tablets: Load up cartoons for the kids and the back seat stays peaceful
- Bring a cooler bag: Planning to buy Costco frozen goods? An insulated bag is a must — no stress even if traffic delays your return
- Pack drinks and snacks: A full stomach cuts road rage in half
- Podcasts and audiobooks: For adults-only trips, turn dead time into quality listening time
[Bonus] What If Budget and Physics Didn’t Matter? — 3 Staff Fantasies
This part is purely for fun (ha). Working with cars all day gives you some wild ideas — here are three sci-fi traffic solutions we dreamed up.
Fantasy 1: Extreme Dynamic Parking Pricing
The second AI detects congestion, giant signs flash: “Current parking rate: 10,000 yen/hour!” Everyone but the ultra-committed wealthy U-turns instantly. Roads cleared! (Complaints department would need its own building.)
Fantasy 2: F1 Pit-Stop Drive-Through Shopping
Pre-order online, pull into a pit lane, and robotic arms Tetris-stack your trunk in 3 seconds. Hot dog handed through the window. Total stop time: 2 minutes.
Fantasy 3: A Floating Costco on the Edo River
Build a Costco on an aircraft-carrier-sized barge and float it on the Edo River. Drive your car onto a ferry and shop on the ship. Total independence from the road network!
…Back to reality though (ha) — “shift your timing,” “use back roads,” and “upgrade your in-car experience” remain the three things that actually work.
Summary: 3 Keys to Beating Misato Traffic
- Pick your timing: Right after opening or after 4 PM is your best bet
- Pick your route: Skip the main roads and use residential streets (ask us for details)
- Upgrade your ride: A spacious rental or an ACC-equipped vehicle eliminates traffic stress at its root
