Information about choosing used cars is everywhere online. “Mileage should be below ○○,000 km” “Choose one with no accident history”——none of these are wrong, but where you live and how you use the car completely changes the “right answer.”
We’ve delivered over 200 used cars annually to customers in the Soka, Yashio, and Koshigaya areas. Through this experience, we’ve learned that there are cars that fit this area well and cars that don’t.
Today, rather than general internet advice, I’ll share what we can only say as a local car dealer.
Don’t Underestimate the “Stop and Go” of National Routes 4 and 298
Most people living in the Soka area regularly use National Route 4 and Route 298. During morning and evening rush hours, you’re constantly stopping and starting at traffic lights.
In environments with frequent “stop and go” driving, the gap between catalog fuel efficiency and actual fuel efficiency widens significantly. Especially for SUVs and minivans with engine displacements of 2.0L or more, even if the catalog lists 15 km/L, actual performance is often 8-9 km/L.
Conversely, hybrid vehicles and mild hybrid vehicles truly shine in traffic congestion. With this area’s frequent low-speed driving where motor assist is effective, fuel efficiency close to catalog values is common.
The popular choices for customers in the Soka and Yashio areas at our shop are:
- Aqua / Fit Hybrid——For those primarily commuting
- Sienta Hybrid / Freed Hybrid——For families with children
- Vezel Hybrid——For those wanting an SUV but concerned about fuel efficiency
If you search online just wanting an “SUV,” you might end up with a fuel-inefficient imported vehicle. Working backwards from the roads you’ll be driving on is the first step to avoiding regrets.
Multi-Story Parking Lot “Height Restrictions,” Often Overlooked
Ion Lake Town, Lala Garden Kasukabe, Ario Washimiya——most weekends in this area, people go shopping at malls.
One important thing to note is height restrictions in multi-story parking lots. Many commercial facilities have floors with 1,550mm height restrictions. Recently popular tall light vehicles (N-BOX, Spacia, Tanto, etc.) have a total height of around 1,780mm, so they often can only park on the rooftop level.
“The parking lot gets crowded so I stopped going to the mall” is actually a pretty common complaint from customers.
Those commuting to central Tokyo should also be careful. Most coin-operated parking in Tokyo has a 1,550mm height restriction. SUVs with roof racks may not fit.
When choosing a car, thinking about “where you’ll park it” prevents failures.
Winter Mornings in Saitama Get Surprisingly Cold
“Since it’s the Kanto region, you don’t need winter tires, right?”——This is what many people who’ve moved to Saitama often say.
Actually, winter temperatures in the Soka and Koshigaya areas drop to around minus 3°C on some days. It’s 2-3°C colder than central Tokyo, and ordinary intersections and shaded areas on bridges regularly freeze over.
While winter tires may not be necessary, all-season tires are an option worth knowing about. When buying a used car, checking tire tread depth and manufacturing date is of course important, but being able to suggest “would you consider switching to all-season tires for your next tire replacement for this area?” is something only a local car dealer can do.

“Commuting to Central Tokyo” vs. “Staying Local” Makes the Choice of Car Completely Different
Even if you live in the same Soka, the optimal car is completely different depending on whether you commute to central Tokyo or stay local.
For Those Commuting to Central Tokyo
- Parking costs 20,000-30,000 yen per month → Budget for vehicle purchase decreases
- Tokyo’s streets are narrow → Compact cars are advantageous
- Using highways (Shuto Expressway, Outer Ring Road) → Need power for easy merging
- → Fit, Note, Swift are the safe choices
For Those Staying Local
- Home parking → Fewer size restrictions
- Shopping and shuttling → Sliding doors are convenient
- Route 4 and 298 traffic → Hybrids still have the advantage
- → Sienta, Freed, Roomy are popular
The “recommended used cars rankings” on the internet are uniform nationwide, but cars that fit your specific usage are found by narrowing down in this way.
“Cheap Cars” and “Good Value Cars” Are Different
Let me say one last thing as a car dealer, speaking from the heart.
Many people search used car sites sorting by “lowest price first.” But even if the vehicle price is cheap, some cars become expensive after purchase.
- All four tires are cracked → Replacement right after delivery costs 50,000 yen more
- Battery is weak → Engine won’t start on cold winter mornings
- Inspection valid for only 1 month → Inspection costs 100,000 yen or more immediately
Conversely, a vehicle with a slightly higher price but new tires, 2-year warranty, and completed maintenance often turns out cheaper over 2 years.
We make sure to explain these “hidden costs” at the quotation stage. If there’s a car you’re interested in, please don’t hesitate to consult with us.
